Immigration Program for Refugees Working in Healthcare
Canada has announced to introduce new applications for PR from refugee claimants. However, Canada is prioritizing refugee claimants who provided direct healthcare to Canadian citizens during the pandemic.
Canada will start to accept these applications on December 14. The immigration minister of Canada announced two new temporary immigration programs after the summer. However, one program is for refugees in Quebec, and the other program is for refugees in other Canadian provinces.
This program is especially for nurses, orderlies, and service aides. The government will start applications from December 14 to August 31, 2021. However, applicants will need to comply with existing admissibility requirements.
The applicants can be those who are working in the security, criminality, and health sector. Moreover, they can also take their family members along who are in Canada. They can also be a part of the permanent residency application.
Eligibility for Applicants
Applicants who are doing an internship will also get consideration regardless of whether it was paid or not. Moreover, it should be an essential part of a post-secondary study program, professional order requirement, or a vocational training program is one of the occupations.
The new program will also include common-law partners and spouses of refugee claimants. It can be those who died due to coronavirus in Canada. However, these family members can also be eligible for this program if they arrived in Canada before August 14, 2020.
Applicants will need to send their applications to the IRCC website. The immigration department of Canada will make the final decisions regarding applications for permanent residence. However, the final decision will be according to the eligibility criteria and other requirements.
Applicants in Quebec
Applicants from Quebec will first need to submit their applications with IRCC. However, once Canada will determine that they comply with the requirements, Quebec will then process the application.
Moreover, Quebec’s immigration department will validate if applicants are meeting the requirements for their special asylum seekers’ program. The government will send the Quebec Selection Certificate (CSQ) to the successful applicants.
The federal government will offer PR to residents once they comply with all the requirements.
The province of Quebec is more powerful than other Canadian provinces. It has more immigration powers and is allowed to set unique eligibility criteria for refugees.
Applicants will need to meet specific criteria to get approval:
- Applicants who had applied for asylum before March 13 and received a work permit.
- Working experience a minimum of 750 hours in one of the eligible occupations before September 1, 2021.
- Should have worked for a minimum of 120 hours between March 13 and August 14, 2020.
- Candidates who have completed an internship in the health sector as part of their study program leading to eligible jobs or to meet the requirements of a professional order for suitable jobs may get counted towards the hours required by the program.
Moreover, principal applicants will need to include their family members in Canada in their application. Additionally, applications from common-law partners and spouses will also get acceptance. These applications can be from the claimants who have already worked in Canada’s eligible jobs between March 13 and August 14, 2020. This program can be for those who died due to COVID-19.
However, these new programs will be for refugee claimants who have worked during the pandemic. This new program results from several months of negotiations that happened between the Quebec and Canadian governments.
