The Distinguished Talent Visa is an interesting visa to migrate to Australia. However, it offers permanent residency to people having an internationally recognized record for exceptional and outstanding achievement in any eligible area.

Australia made changes to this visa system on 14 November 2020. Previously, there were two subclasses for this Visa onshore and offshore. However, these two subclasses are now merged to make one subclass (Subclass 858 Visa).

This visa system aims to target individuals who hold a record of exceptional and outstanding achievement in the following:

Moreover, this program also requires the applicants to still be prominent in that particular area. Such individuals can be an asset to the Australian community. They will need to demonstrate that they have no difficulty in getting employment in any area. Candidates will get the nomination from any Australian individual or organization having a national reputation in the area.

There is also a pathway for the applicants who gained a Visa in situations where the minister’s opinion the applicant has provided specialized assistance to the Australian Government in terms of security, receiving appropriate advice from the intelligence or security agency or the Director-General of security.
The Australian Government also announced the Global Talent Independent Program for the year 2020/21. The Government will offer 15,000 fast-tracked visas to individuals in 7 targeted sectors, such as the technology sector.

The recent changes in this program came into effect on the 14th of November 2020. It will make things easier for some onshore candidates to apply. The Government has removed the requirement for the applicants to be offshore. However, there is no disadvantage for onshore candidates now.
Applicants in Australia need to have a substantive visa or a particular bridging visa while applying. However, certain temporary visa holders will no longer be excluded. These new provisions will allow for potential health waver in certain circumstances.
