Job Opportunities in Canada
In October, Canada has added another 84,000 jobs. However, it is significantly slower employment growth as compared to the last month.
Canada’s Labor Market creates around 378,200 jobs between August and September. During October, Canada re-imposed the restrictions due to an increase in COVID-19 cases, which causes the employment growth to slow down.
Simultaneously, there was very little change in the unemployment rate than in September. According to the Last Labor Force Survey by Statistics Canada, the unemployment rate has reduced. In September, the unemployment rate was 9.0%, which decreased to 8.9% in October.
According to the survey, it is the first time since the start of the COVID-19 global pandemic; the number of self-employed professionals has increased by 33,000. Among the people who worked at least half of their usual hours, the number of professionals working at home also increased by 150,000.
The people who have benefited most from this increase in employments are the women between the age group of 25-54. However, the youth employment rate is still below the pre-pandemic levels than all other major age groups.
Labor Market Conditions Vary from Province to Province
British Columbia, Ontario, Labrador, Alberta, Newfoundland, and Prince Edward Island are the provinces that saw an increase in employment rate in October. However, other Canadian provinces have also experienced little growth in their employment rates.
British Columbia tops the board in October by creating 34,000 new jobs. However, most of them are full-time jobs.
Ontario remains second by creating 31,000 new jobs in October. These jobs are mainly in retail trade, wholesale, and manufacturing industries.
Alberta is in third place by creating 23,000 jobs in October. However, it is a province that has increased its employment rate consecutively for the fifth month after large job losses. Most of these employments are occurring in Calgary.
Employments in Labrador and Newfoundland have increased by 5,900 in October, and Prince Edward Island has shown an increase of 900.
Increase in Many Industries Offset by a Decrease in Food Services and Accommodation
According to Statistics Canada, several industries have shown an increase in employment rate, but industries like accommodation and food services have significantly decreased. The total job loss in these industries is 48,000, and it happened mainly in Quebec.
Other industries like the culture, information, and recreation industry also experienced a significant decrease in Alberta, Quebec, and Saskatchewan’s employment. However, the employment rate for warehousing, transportation, and construction industries remained largely unchanged during October.
Whereas, employment in professional, wholesale trade and technical services, including educational services, has increased a lot, surpassing pre-pandemic levels.
Data collected from Statistics Canada’s Labor Force Survey provides important insights regarding the employment and recovery impacts of COVID-19. This data helps get insights about unemployment rates, regional and demographics variations, industry trends, and national trends. However, these insights can be used to inform policy decisions, like where to direct spending on education, income assistance, and training.
